God, Let Me Play Well
By Gregg Easterbrook

God, let me play well but fairly.
Help me to learn something that matters
once the game is over.
Let competition make me strong but never hostile.
Always let me help my opponent up.
Never catch me rejoicing in the adversity of others.
If I know victory, allow me to be happy;
if I am denied, keep me from envy.
Remind me that sports are just games.
If through athletics I set an example,
let it be a good one.

Do The "Wright" Thing!

Villanova, Do what you need to do to keep Jay!
Philadelphia Basketball has had many heroes, players and coaches alike. We can go back to the Harry Litwack coached teams at Temple in the 50's with Guy Rodgers and Hal Lear along with Dr. Jack Ramsey's St. Joes Hawks of the same time frame. LaSalle's super talented team in the late sixties along with the powerful Penn and Villanova teams of the 70's give us great memories of each School in Philadelphia's Big 5.
As we enter every new decade, a new coach with Philadelphia roots seems to head back to the City of Brotherly Love and soon an new hero is born. This decade's honors goes to Churchville, Pa native and Council Rock High School Graduate, Jay Wright. Coach Wright took over a storied Villanova Basketball Program in transition and returned it to being a national power. He has the unique ability to recruit and coach, at an extreme high level. He is a caring man, whose name will someday be mentioned in the same sentence as Ramsey, Litwack, Daly and Chaney.
He great work has been noticed by other big college programs and rumors swirl that a local professional team is interested in his services. The only advice this former gym rat from Collingswood, NJ can give the powers that be at Nova, Please keep Jay a Wildcat! JV

Here is the Founder's View on Philly Basketball Teams going to the NCAA Field of 65.

Pennsylvannia- Coach: Glenn Miller. Current Record 11-7. Conference: Ivy League.
Coach Miller's first year at Penn has had an average Quaker start. Beating teams who they
should beat and playing the big boys tough. This group is absolutely the class of the Ivies
this season. Should easily make the dance, get a low seed and tap out in the first round.
Chance of making the Tourney: 90%. Chance of making Sweet Sixteen: 15%.

Drexel: Coach: Bruiser Flint. Current Record: 16-5. Conference: Colonial Conference.
Dragons are having a big year, which is no surprise to me. Bruiser can coach and recruit.
How Lowell let him go for Steve Lappas is something I can't still understand. Beat Syracuse
at Syracuse and cleaned the Big Five's clock for the first time ever. Even if they don't win the
conference, they should get an at large bid.
Chance of making the Tourney: 90%. Chance of making Sweet Sixteen: 50%

Villanova: Coach: Jay Wright. Current record: 14-7. Conference: Big East
This would be a big year for most, but a less than average beginning for the Main Line
Wildcats. This is a good team who has not played it's best basketball yet. Speculation that
Kentucky is chasing Coach Wright has been a distraction. Look for a hot streak to start
soon!
Chance of making the Tourney: 90%. Chance of making Sweet Sixteen: 60%

Temple: Coach: Fran Dunphy: Current record: 9-12. Conference: Atlantic 10.
Armed with very little talent on his first team at Temple, Coach Dunphy and the Owls
will claw their way back to .500. Which is a minor miracle. You might see this group in the
NIT. Make no mistake about it, this will be Coach's Fran's worst team on North Broad.
Chance of making the Tourney: 10%. Chance of making Sweet Sixteen: 5%

Lasalle: Coach: John Giannini. Current Record: 10-12 Conference: Atlantic 10.
Heartbreaking losses have taken their toll on this Explorer Team. Coach John has taken a
program in complete disrepair and put them in the right direction. A few years away from
being a conference contender. The role of spoiler is the best this group can hope for.
Chance of making the Tourney: 10%. Chance of making Sweet Sixteen: 5%
